Question (00:00:00.20)
Are all dental implant brands the same, or does the system really matter?

Dr. Leung (00:00:07.05)
I wouldn’t encourage patients to look at name brands as if you’re buying a name brand purse. What we should really concentrate on is the way the implant itself is designed. As a clinician, in practicing and doing the actual placement of the implant, what we look for is the features of the implant, and we select the implant based on what the implant system has to offer, as well as what the anatomy that we’re looking at for that particular case. If you think about an implant design, they have different threads, they have different angles that the threads are designed. They have different surface coating. They’re all sorts of different features that are constantly changing because the implant system is constantly being upgraded and improved. The take home is not so much the name of the implant company. It’s really about how they designed the implant that truly matters in relationship to the success of the implant in that particular site on the long basis.

Question (00:01:16.23)
How do you choose which implant system is right for my case?

Dr. Leung (00:01:21.24)
When we evaluate a site, in some cases, the bone itself is very dense, and in In other cases, the bone is very soft. Again, depending on what type of biology that we’re dealing with, I would choose the implant system that would fit into that particular case the needs of that particular case. The brand itself is really about how the implant is designed in relationship to the case scenario that we have to deal with to ensure long-term success.

Question (00:02:00.00)
What happens if my implant needs a repair years later and the parts are discontinued?

Dr. Leung (00:02:06.11)
As time goes by, there are some implant companies that no longer exist. The good news is there are outside third-party vendors that would carry what they call compatible components. If an implant or an implant crown in the future needs to be repaired, there are, again, third parties that would sell components that would be compatible to restore pieces that were done like 20, 30 years ago, even though the implant company no longer exists. So far, I was able to utilize third party vendors to be able to find components that would still help the patient currently to restore the older implant systems.

Question (00:02:52.08)
Is a cheaper implant system a safe way to save money?

Dr. Leung (00:02:56.14)
We choose the implant system, again, based on the design and what it has to offer. We don’t really focus on the price of the implant. We focus on what the implant itself can do or how it performs in the case that we’re doing. The price, somewhat irrelevant because that’s not how we choose the implant system that we perform.

Question (00:03:21.23)
Which implant systems do you use in your office and why?

Dr. Leung (00:03:27.00)
For my current systems, I use I use NEODENT, I use HIOSSEN. I still use STRAUMAN to some extent. Why do I choose this system? First, I’ve been using them for over 20 plus years, so I’ve seen their companies grow and evolve. I like that variety because patients don’t all come in one size, of course. Again, depending on what we’re trying to do and what the clinical needs are, it’s good to have a very all-inclusive implant system that It gives you the sizes and components that you need to be able to do the case successfully. The customer support is also important because at times you will run into issues. It’s good to have a company that have the customer and technical support to get you through some of the cases that would have complications.

Question (00:04:21.05)
Does the implant system affect how natural my final tooth looks and feels?

Dr. Leung (00:04:27.01)
No, not at all.

Question (00:04:29.17)
How does the implant connection type affect long-term gum health?

Dr. Leung (00:04:34.06)
Let’s fast forward to the more current implants. The majority of the implants are now internal hex in terms of preventing bacteria from populating in the interface between the implant and the crown. Internal hex with the more current designs now are more tissue friendly and less issues with bacterial contamination into the implant site.

Implant System Question and Answer with Dr. Angela Leung

Why implant system choice matters

Medically reviewed by Dr. Angela Leung, DDS – Last reviewed August 19, 2026

Not all implant systems are designed the same way. The body shape, connection type, restorative components, and guided planning options all affect how stable the implant feels, how the final crown or bridge fits, how easy it is to clean, and how well it handles bite force over time. The wrong system can contribute to recurring irritation, loose screws, chipped restorations, and a result that never feels quite right. The right system supports better planning from surgery through the final tooth.

Dental implant brands and models

The live Angela Leung DDS PC implant systems reference page lists Nobel Biocare, Straumann, Hiossen, and Neodent. Final model selection depends on your anatomy, available bone, gum conditions, bite forces, esthetic goals, and whether your case involves one tooth, several teeth, or a full-arch reconstruction.

Nobel Biocare is a widely recognized implant brand for single-tooth, multiple-tooth, and full-mouth restoration planning. Model families patients may hear discussed include NobelActive, NobelParallel Conical Connection, and NobelReplace Conical Connection. NobelActive is positioned for high primary stability and esthetic demands, NobelParallel CC is presented as a broad-use option across bone qualities, and NobelReplace CC combines a tapered body with a conical connection.

Straumann is commonly associated with implant systems built for stability, restorative efficiency, and immediate treatment protocols. Model families patients may hear discussed include Straumann BLX, Straumann BLT, and Straumann TLX. BLX and TLX are positioned around immediacy and strong primary stability, while BLT is known for the advantages of a tapered body in soft bone and fresh extraction sockets.

Hiossen is known for its ET implant system and restorative flexibility across different clinical situations. Model families patients may hear discussed include ET III NH, ET III SA, and ET IV. Hiossen’s ET NH line emphasizes a hydrophilic surface, while ET III and ET IV system variants are presented around primary stability and broad clinical use.

Neodent offers systems used for single-tooth treatment, broader restorative planning, and immediate full-arch protocols. Model families patients may hear discussed include Helix Grand Morse and NeoArch. Grand Morse is built around the Helix design and a broad prosthetic portfolio, while NeoArch is positioned for immediate fixed-arch protocols, including edentulous and more advanced full-arch cases.

A brand name alone does not tell you whether an implant will be ideal for your mouth. The right model depends on the final restorative plan, the available bone and tissue, the position of the tooth, your bite, and how the restoration will be maintained long term. That decision is made after the exam, records, and imaging when indicated.

Types of implant systems we plan around

Single-tooth implant systems

Used when one tooth is missing and the goal is a natural-looking replacement with healthy gum contours, stable support, and a crown that feels right when you chew and floss.

Multiple-tooth implant systems

Used when several teeth are missing and the plan needs to account for spacing, implant distribution, restorative access, force control, and hygiene.

Full-arch implant systems

Used when many or all teeth are failing or missing and the goal is a fixed, more stable full-arch solution designed around chewing, speech, comfort, and long-term maintenance.

Narrow-space and limited-bone options

Used when a case involves tighter spaces, reduced bone volume, or anatomy that requires a more selective implant design rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Guided and technology-assisted implant planning

Your live service menu already includes Implant Systems, Mini Dental Implants, Osstell Implant Technology, and Simplant Guided Implant Placement, which supports a more precise workflow when those services or technologies are indicated.

How we decide which implant system is right for you

We start with the end result. That means evaluating your bite, available bone, gum shape, smile line, restorative goals, and how the final implant crown, bridge, or full-arch prosthesis will be cleaned and maintained. Digital impressions, photos, and CBCT imaging may also be used when they improve planning and predictability.

You should leave your consultation knowing why a certain system makes sense for your case, what the sequence looks like, and what the practical options are before treatment begins.

Questions people ask before booking

There is no single “best” brand for every person. The better question is which implant system fits your bone, bite, gum contours, esthetic goals, and long-term maintenance needs.

Yes. Implant model design affects primary stability, restorative options, soft-tissue management, and how the final restoration is supported—especially in esthetic zones, extraction sockets, and full-arch cases.

It depends on how many teeth are missing, the condition of the remaining teeth, your bite, your bone support, and whether the goal is a single crown, a bridge, or a fixed full-arch restoration.

Not every case needs one, but many implant cases benefit from 3D imaging to evaluate bone volume, anatomy, and planning accuracy.

Often, yes. The key is identifying whether the problem is implant position, component choice, bite overload, tissue irritation, hygiene design, or a combination of those issues.
